Asus surprised the Android market in 2021 by launching a high-end compact smartphone, the Asus Zenfone 8. This device has a size well below the market average, but still manages to concentrate the technical characteristics necessary to be considered a top range, albeit with some sacrifices.
One of those sacrifices is the cameras, where the Asus Zenfone 8 is limited to include two rear photo sensors, when most competitors in this price category in 2021 opt for three or four sensors. However, that hasn’t stopped Asus from making the most of its little top of the range and the results are now in sight.
DxOMark, a reference in photography and video recording with mobile devices, thoroughly analyzed the Asus Zenfone 8’s cameras and gave it a final score of 120 points, tying with Pixel 5 (one of the references in the segment) and surpassing Samsung Galaxy S21, a smartphone of larger dimensions and with another camera, which obtained “only” 119 points.
The iPhone 12 mini was not far from being reached by the Asus Zenfone 8!
In addition to the Android competition it managed to surpass and match, the Asus Zenfone 8 was just two points away from catching the iPhone 12 mini, Apple’s top-of-the-line compact smartphone that is currently the best compact device on the market for photography prefers.
Looking at the results area by area, the Asus Zenfone 8 was at the level of the best smartphones on the market in terms of photography and video, failing only in the “Zoom” category, which encompasses the performance of the ultra-wide camera and, as indicated by the category name, zoom.
The Asus Zenfone 8 doesn’t have a dedicated zoom camera (neither telephoto nor periscope) and therefore uses its 64MP 1/1.73″ main camera, with f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization to make use of the zoom digital. The camera’s high resolution helps it outperform the iPhone 12 mini in this chapter, but it falls short of the Galaxy S21’s optical zoom telephoto camera.
The Asus Zenfone 8’s 12MP wide-angle does not show bad results, but it falls short of what the competitors have, and the excellent numbers of this DxOMark test are due to the efficiency and work of the main camera (which, for 90 % of users will be the most important). The Asus Zenfone 8 has been on the market since May 2021 and has been surprising with all the capabilities it offers in such a compact size. This could even be the best compact smartphone of the year on the Android market, so it will be interesting to follow the public’s response to the new Asus.
